About the Institute
"To be the foremost global nanotechnology information provider and membership organisation."
"To foster, develop and promote all aspects of responsible nanoscience and nanotechnology that have the potential to benefit society and the environment"
The Institute of Nanotechnology (IoN) was founded by Ottilia Saxl in January 1997. It is a registered Charity, whose core activities are focused on education and training in nanotechnology. It grew out of the Centre for Nanotechnology, part funded by the DTI through the UK's National Initiative on Nanotechnology (NION). The Institute was one of the world's first nanotechnology information providers and is now a global leader.
The Institute works closely with governments, universities, researchers, companies and the general public to educate and inform on all aspects of nanotechnology. It also organises various international scientific events, conferences and educational courses that examine the implications of nanotechnology across a wide variety of themes and sectors.
Engineering Council Affiliation
Membership of the Engineering Council is recognition of the contribution the IoN has made to nanotechnology. It will allow the IoN to work more closely with other learned and professional societies. Engineering Council affiliation emphasises the high importance IoN places on supporting the professional development of its members.
Between 2001 and 2003, as part of the formulation of a nanotechnology strategy for the UK, the then DTI approached the IoN to organise fact finding Missions to key nanotechnology locations.
UK industrialists, scientists and Government representatives were taken to visit facilities and companies in Germany and across the USA. Further Missions were organised to some of the major NanoCentres of Europe, including Grenoble, Karlsruhe, Louvain, Copenhagen and Cork. At that time the IoN also mapped the UK nanotechnology 'landscape' for the DTI, in partnership with the National Physical Laboratory.
Working with the EU
From 2002 to 2007, the IoN was the lead partner in Nanoforum, 'the European Nanotechnology Gateway', an important dissemination project aimed at raising the levels of nanotechnology knowledge across EU Member States.
The project produced a very popular and informative website containing many original analyses and reports. A series of events and workshops also took place across Europe. Although funding has finished, the project has been so successful that it is continuing as a European Economic Interest Group, supporting the dissemination of results from other EU projects.
To date, the IoN has been successful in leading and partnering in a number of EU projects, including ObservatoryNANO, ICPC-Nanonet, NanoCharM, ENRHES, FramingNano, EICOON, NanoCode, NanoSustain, NANO-TV, and CLIP.
In our role as the foremost global nanotechnology information provider, we provide the following services:
- public information provision
- cutting edge conferences and courses
- market intelligence
- advertising and sponsorship opportunities
- identifying and coordinating new research projects
- promoting education and training.
As an affiliate organisation of the IoN, nanoIT provides a range of specialist IT services and support, including:
Established to promote an understanding of the emerging field of nanotechnology and its potential for economic and social benefit, the IoN undertakes independent, government and industry commissioned studies.
Many of these reports are now publicly available. Major publications include: Industry Sector Updates, Company Case Studies, Market Information, Research Activities across Europe and Conference Proceedings.
Nanotechnology will affect every aspect of our lives. It is already finding application in novel foods, disposable displays, smart clothing and coatings, retinal, cochlear & neural implants, robotic surgery, space medicine, personalised drugs, securing & crime detection. If you want to know more about nanotechnology developments worldwide, the key players, the latest advances, opportunities for industry, and more, become a member today.
Advertising & Sponsorship
The Institute's award winning website receives over 115,000 visitor sessions, 990,000 page impressions and 1.75 million hits per month making it THE nanotech website for all organisations with an interest in nanotechnology. Exclusive and shared sponsorship newsletters are sent out, directly to our database of nanotechnology contacts.
Sponsorship/advertising opportunities are also available at all IoN conferences. View details of our unrivalled advertising and promotional opportunities.
The website offers unparalleled solutions for high technology and advanced manufacturing organisations seeking access to a global nanotechnology audience. Strategic advertising opportunities permit traders to bring to market commercially available, novel developments. Building on the website's strong connections with both industry and academia, the IoN website now allows professional and educational establishment to develop a unique, online exposure for upcoming job vacancies and courses.
