Nowadays people are discovering things, universities and now patenting it, instead of putting it into the greater community of science through technical journals and all those things. They're quickly slamming on the patent so they can commercialy exploit it.

That is the order of the day. R & D is a very high capital intensive exercise, so investors or even the government for that matter expect some kind of financial returns. Therefore we should not blame researches for having such metality becuase at the end of the day they are just like any other employee who need to show results.
