Following a protest at a recent Nanotechnology event in London, the Institute of Nanotechnology has extended an invitation to the group involved to present their views at the next meeting of the Advisory Group of the Institute, on January 20th in London.

Ottilia Saxl, CEO of the Institute, is quoted as saying "Nanotechnology is about the design of many new products using our understanding of about how things work at the very small scale. We all benefit already from nanotechnology - it has led to the invention of DVD players, life-saving air bags in our cars and is now leading to successful treatments for hitherto fatal brain tumours".

She continued:
"Those of us involved in nanotechnology are keen to explore any public concerns. I unreservedly recommend interested individuals read the recent independent study by the Royal Society / Royal Academy of Engineering on 'Nanosciences and nanotechnologies - opportunities and uncertainties'. This report can be downloaded free at http://www.nanotec.org.uk/finalReport.htm. This reflects very much the views and attitude of the Institute".

Thank you for your invite to attend your meeting in London on the 20th January. Coming so soon after the festive period (the busiest time of year for us angels) I'm sure you will understand that the heavenly THRONG will be settling down on our clouds for a hard earned winter sleep at the end of January. However, from our vantage point on high we have noticed a number of more earthly bodies who are also taking an interest in Nanotechnology issues. Maybe you would consider inviting some of them to make presentations at your meeting.

Try contacting:

Greenpeace (UK)
Institute of Science In Society (ISIS)
ETC Group
Scientists for Global Resposibility
Corporate Watch
Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITGD) DEMOS PMO (Pieces et Main d'Oeuvre)

seasons greetings and heavenly thanks for your email

Sarah Phine (on behalf of Angels Against Nanotechnology)

In response, and as the IoN actively encourages open discussions on all aspects of nanotechnology, director of Greenpeace, Doug Parr, has been invited to join the IoN advisory group.

He would join amongst current members, Brian Culham (HSE representative) and Donald Bruce (member of the Church of Scotland ethics group), who are also well known and respected.
