CNR warns of trouble for science in India

Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister C N R Rao said that science in India faced many problems. The country would be in serious trouble in the next five years if it did not do anything to address the problems, he warned.

Speaking after receiving Y T Thathacari Award here on Wednesday, he said that China was far ahead in many ways and particularly in nano science and nano technology.

He said China became the leader and produced 40 per cent of the world’s journals and research papers on nano science, whereas the contribution of India was less than 10 per cent. It also emerged master in inorganic nanoscience.

Nanotechnology was a technology where about 1000 CDs can be placed inside a wristwatch. The chip size reduced every 1-2 year, he stated.

Nano technology had wide applications and hence had become highly popular, competitive even in Arab and African countries. These sciences are sophisticated and difficult.

In next 5 years, the ordinary white bulbs could be replaced with galium nitrade, which emits blue rays and can be turned white, he said.

Rao, who also heads the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, said that imitation of others was the worst disease of India. The Indian scientists should think differently and innovatively to achieve big success.
