Korean Researchers Build 8-Nano Terabit Chip

Korean scientists have developed a memory chip for semiconductors that is the size of your thumbnail and can hold 1,250 DVD-quality movie files.

Professor Choi Yang-kyu and his research team at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and the National Nano Fab Center, which is run by the Ministry of Science and Technology, developed an 8-nanometer terabit-level NAND flash memory unit cell.

A terabyte is a thousand times bigger than a gigabyte and is enough space to hold 12,500 years of digital newspaper files, 500,000 mp3s, or one million high resolution photos. A nanometer is one-12,000th the width of a human hair. By comparison, among the chips in use now is a 40nm 32GB NAND flash that was released by Samsung last year.

Choi said the chips when produced will be one-25th the size of Samsung's 32G chips and the density will be 25 times larger. He said there are still some problems that need to be solved, such as the making the area where the information is saved smaller. The research team expects it will be another 10 years before the chips are ready for production.
