European Nanotechnology Masters Recognition Scheme Launch


Innovations on the nanoscale will widely affect and change all sectors of industry in the decades to come. Laying the foundation for this change, through multi-disciplinary science, are research and educational institutions. A new approach to training and skills development is required, and many universities are now offering masters courses in nanotechnology – each with a different emphasis. The Institute of Nanotechnology, in collaboration with a consortium of course-providing academics and industry representatives, is engaged in enhancing, supporting and benchmarking the quality of education at the masters level in nanotechnology.

The European Nanotechnology Masters Recognition Scheme will be formally launched at the EuroNanoforum conference 2007 on the 20th of June, to be held in Dusseldorf. The event and reception, sponsored by the British Consulate-General Munich, will consist of an informative and reflective session on the nature of education and training in nanotechnology. The presentations will feature an introduction to the European Nanotechnology Masters Recognition Scheme by Kshitij Aditeya Singh. Keynote presentations will include Dr. Martin Bennink, University of Twente, speaking on the lessons in an interdisciplinary approach to nanotechnology education at the masters level. Dr. Renzo Tomellini, from the European Commission will speak on the education and training in the European Union as an integrated approach to nanoscience and nanotechnologies.

Del Stark, from the European Nanotechnology trade alliance will present on shaping education by interaction with industry. The concluding presentation will feature the Nanotechnology skills and training survey by Kshitij Aditeya Singh, which will provide an overview of the skills and training needs in industry. The survey aims to inform educational institutions of existing skills gaps that are hindering the commercialisation and transfer of technology.
