SCENIHR incorporates stakeholder comments in nanosafety report.
The European Commission published an updated version of the report of the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks on risk assessment of nanomaterials.
The updated version was adopted in March 2006 and takes into account online comments from 70 individuals and representatives of government, NGO's, academia and business in the EU, USA, Switzerland and Belarus of end 2005. The comments were mostly positive about the conclusions and recommendations in SCENIHRs original report of October 2005. They also included some proposals which are relevant to the EC policy but outside the mandate of SCENIHR. They ask for:
Better coordination on nanotechnology issues in the EU and internationally;
International consensus over the testing and risk assessment methodologies of nanotechnology products;
Integration of risk assessment regulations on engineered nanomaterials in existing legislation, deciding when they are to be considered as a new substance;
Starting a stakeholder dialogue;
International standardisation of terminologies and risk assessment methods;
More research on risk-benefit assessment of nanofood and nanomedicine;
Stimulating public perception and consumer confidence in nanotechnologies.
The revised version as well as an analysis of the stakeholder comments is available from the EC websites.
