Fujian leads in Diode Pumped solid state Laser technology 04-03-2012

Fujian takes the international lead with its Diode Pumped solid state Laser (DPL) technology development.

The technology plays a fundamental role in advanced manufacturing, and cultivating and developing the strategic emerging industry.

At the 2011 National Science and Technology Awards Conference, high-quality crystal components, modules and DPL technology won second prize for the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award.

Lin Wenxiong, a researcher from Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter at the Chinese Academy of Science, took charge in developing the technology of high-quality crystal components, modules and DPL technology.

Lin explained that DPL technology uses solid state lasering and can be applied widely in fields such as manufacturing, laser display, and national defense. The DPL market amounts to hundreds of billions yuan.

Lin also said that after many years of work, Fujian has become the global leader in laser technology, materials and laser system integration. Among the eight core technologies of high-quality crystal components, modules and DPL, three are considered globally unique and five meet international standards.

LBO crystal is one of the most common nonlinear crystals. However, the high cost and self-consumption of the product has obstructed its use. Lin and his team conducted in-depth research and extended the life of LBO crystals to thousands of hours and reduced it losses.

Lin said the research on laser Nanometer cutting technology will be the priority in the future. As an example of the uses of the cutting technology, Lin explained that if automotive glass was cut by adopting laser Nanometer cutting technology, its surface structure would change and water drops would be able to slide without a trace.
