About the Masters Recognition Scheme

A new approach to skills development and training is needed for the multidisciplinary field of nanoscience and nanotechnology, and many universities are now offering masters courses in nanotechnology – each with a different emphasis. The Institute of Nanotechnology, in collaboration with a consortium of course-providing academics and industry representatives, is engaged in enhancing, supporting and benchmarking the quality of education and training in nanotechnology. The Chairman of the education sub-group Dr. David Carey from Surrey University and his deputy Dr. Steve Dunn from Cranfield University are steering the development in 2007-08 academic year.

The interface of the scheme is web-based, fronting a searchable database on nanotechnology courses that allows an online comparison of course content. It enables students to choose programmes based on their knowledge and aspirations. Industry can partially assess post-graduate competencies for recruitment through the detailed information provided on the website. It further provides international outreach to education and training in this field.

The tool is expected to provide prospective employers and employees in the rapidly growing area of nanotechnology with an effective source for identifying those opportunities in education, training or professional development.

This website will :

  • enable an online comparison of the content of nano masters courses.
  • allow prospective students to choose the ideal course based on their skills and future aspirations.
  • offer course providers the opportunity to reach out to potential students internationally.
  • assist employers in understanding the competences of graduates, in relation to their business needs.

Quotations

“The IoN Recognition Scheme provides a crucial tool for supporting the UK’s workforce in the most rapidly advancing science- & technology sector; it offers a concise directory of UK Nanotechnology Master’s Programmes which facilitates the identification of training opportunities for students, looking for their perfect post-graduate studies; and companies, seeking professional development for their staff.”    Dr. Steffi Friedrichs, Director Nanotechnologies Industry Association

“ It has been important to us to create a Masters Course recognition scheme that enables prospective students to make informed choices, and we are delighted to have it implemented by a team of academic course coordinators, under the Chairmanship of Dr Steffi Friedrichs and her deputy, Dr Richard Forbes.”
Ottilia Saxl, CEO Institute of Nanotechnology

“ The scheme will not only give employers a dynamic and valuable tool to identify competencies for hiring future nanotechnology graduates but will also enables students to readily identify the courses most suited to their needs and aspirations.”    Del Stark, CEO European Nanotechnology Trade Alliance

“ The NIA can see the benefit to industry of the IoN Nanotechnology Post Graduate Course Recognition Scheme. The Scheme's interrogative website will enable industry to select candidates for interview partially on the basis of subject matter studied, enabling a closer fit to the employers' requirements.”
Morris Roseman, Visteon UK, Ltd.
