Nanotechnology is the basis of many new products and processes that can reduce pollution, minimise use of scarce resources (including energy) and offer substitutes for several hazardous chemicals.
Applications already in the market include catalysts that prevent toxic chemicals from being released into the environment, textile finishes that minimise the need for washing and reduce the transmission of disease, low-toxicity coatings that prevent biofouling, biocidal coatings that reduce the incidence and transmission of MRSA and other diseases, and new generation flame retardants that are much more environmentally friendly.
This event will examine these and other technologies that offer real environmental benefit, and will also review the findings of the recently published STOA report on the Role of Nanotechnology in Chemical Substitution.
Please note that 'Early Bird Rates' end on 4th April 2007.

A number of experimental techniques and commercially available instruments already exist for the sampling, detection, monitoring and characterisation of nanoparticles. However the enormous variety of artificially produced nanoparticle materials, shapes, sizes, surface chemical characteristics, and tendencies to agglomerate, coupled with their presence within populations of naturally occurring nanoparticles, will continue to present scientific challenges to all concerned with the development and use of these techniques and instruments.
This workshop is intended to provide a forum where instrument manufacturers and actual and potential users can find out about, and discuss the parameters of most significance in environmental and health and safety contexts; the capabilities of particular instrumental techniques; and any requirements in the nanotechnology community that can not yet be addressed using available technology.

In the first groundbreaking meeting organized by the Institute of Nanotechnology in May 2006, many issues relating to the manufacture of nanoparticles were explored. Applications are rapidly increasing, but there are many critical issues for both producers and users that are still not fully resolved.
This year's event will examine the latest developments, including innovations in manufacturing, scale-up, stabilization and measurement techniques. The conference will again also include sessions on toxicology and risk, plus an update on current approaches to regulation.
Attendees and presenters in 2006 included:
L’Oreal, Kodak Ltd, Chanel Parfums Beaute, Unilever, BOC Group, Proctor and Gamble, NPL, Agilent Technologies Inc, Intel, Health and Safety Executive, Malvern Instruments, Oxonica and many more.
