MSc in Micro and Nanotechnology –
Engineering, Management and Society

Lancaster University

Micro and nanotechnology (MNT) could well be the next industrial revolution with radical changes in the way we setup, run and market our businesses. Novel and knowledge-based manufacturing has the potential to replace conventional material-intensive manufacturing industries.

Development of a knowledge-based industry requires a highly educated workforce with key competences in the technical, management and societal dimensions of micro and nanotechnologies. Although the spending on MNT will double in the next 2-3 years, there is still a profound skill shortage in the field.

The academic world is reacting fast in providing new nanotechnology courses all over the UK and abroad. How do we know which course is right for us?

Due to the nature of Nanotechnology, all courses are highly interdisciplinary and tend to bring together various technical areas such as physics, chemistry, engineering and biology. The one thing that unites these disciplines is the physical dimension of experiments or devices.

There are even braver schemes like the one adopted by Lancaster University to bring in non-technical disciplines such as entrepreneurship, technology management and social sciences. These schemes look ahead at how the technology and intellectual property generated by research in MNT would be commercialised and perceived by society.
